— Written By

Interested in learning how to turn yard wastes and food scraps in to a rich soil amendment? Join Horticulture Extension Agent Matt Jones and the Harnett County Extension Master Gardener Volunteers for a workshop on composting. The workshop includes a lecture about the science of the decomposition process, understanding the types of materials that are readily compostable, how to fine tune the composing process by finding optimal temperature, moisture, aeration, and pile dimensions, and troubleshooting common composting problems. A demonstration on compost bin construction and the composting process by Extension Master Gardener Volunteers will follow the lecture.

The workshop will be held on Saturday, September 16th from 9:30 am-11:30 am at the Harnett County Agricultural Center in Lillington. Register online at http://go.ncsu.edu/harnettcomposting917 or by calling the Harnett County Extension office.
